Making Halloween Fun and Inclusive for Every Child

Blog
October 27, 2026

It’s that time of year—pumpkins, skeletons, and ghosts, oh my! Many children look forward to trick-or-treating, dressing up as their favorite characters, and admiring Halloween decorations. But Halloween isn’t easy for every child. Sensory differences, food allergies, feeding challenges, anxiety, and accessibility needs can make traditional celebrations challenging for some families.

A few thoughtful adjustments can help make Halloween more welcoming for everyone. Here are some ways to prepare your child and create a more inclusive celebration:

  • Offer non-food treats. Alongside traditional candy, consider offering bookmarks, bubbles, crayons, glow sticks, or stickers so children have more choices.
  • Prepare for what to expect. Use a customizable social story to walk your child through Halloween activities ahead of time. For example, Autism Speaks offers an “All About Halloween” resource.
  • Be mindful of sensory needs. Flashing lights, loud sounds, and sudden scares can be overwhelming. Consider a calmer environment and keep walkways clear and accessible.
  • Welcome different costume choices. Some children may choose not to wear costumes because of sensory differences or personal preferences. Respect their choices and include them in the fun.

For families who choose to celebrate, a few thoughtful adjustments can help make Halloween a more comfortable, accessible, and enjoyable experience for everyone.
