We’re working to bring an inclusive sensory park to downtown Harrisonburg, designed to support children of all abilities through movement, play, and sensory exploration.
This project is a collaboration between The Speech and Language Center and Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance.
The Speech and Language Center is providing the space, ongoing maintenance, and key sensory features.
Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance has secured a $75,000 grant and is contributing an additional $40,000 match, along with design support and leadership in fundraising and community engagement.
Together, this partnership has created a strong foundation, and we are now working to close the remaining funding gap.
Many children need opportunities for movement, sensory input, and calming experiences to regulate and engage with the world around them.
This park will offer space for movement, tactile exploration, visual engagement, sound, and quiet regulation; all in one thoughtfully designed environment.
Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance has been leading the revitalization of Downtown Harrisonburg, the heart of our community, and we’re grateful for their leadership in supporting projects like the public sensory playground. We’re also grateful to be part of a community that shows up in meaningful ways to support inclusive spaces where everyone can play, connect, and enjoy downtown Harrisonburg.
Thanks to your support, and to Harrisonburg Downtown Renaissance for leading our fundraising efforts, we raised $900 during this year’s Great Community Give. These funds will go directly toward the purchase of sun sails for the playground. Visitors can continue to support this project by using the donate button below.
We are working to close the remaining funding gap so construction can begin. Donations can go toward specific elements or support the overall project.
