2021-21-22 - Ava Grace Story-1001.jpg

Ava Grace has most recently been here as an intern with Courtland Meyer, M.Ed., CCC-SLP, but that's not the only experience she has had with us - she was formerly Courtland's client! Find out from Ava Grace what she has learned in her time with us, how she has overcome her own barriers in order to achieve her goals, and how we can accompany each other well as we all grow together.

 Internship Opportunities

Due to our close proximity to James Madison University and other colleges, we get many requests for students seeking observation hours and internships. We are pleased to offer opportunities for Speech, Occupational, Physical Therapy, and ABA undergraduates and graduate students.

We strive to provide the most enriching and comprehensive experience for our students; a process that requires significant effort on the part of our staff members. Because of the time involved in training and educating students, the positions we can offer are limited and highly competitive. We have enjoyed working with some very talented and dedicated students in the past, and we expect the same from those who work with us in the future.

Fall Internships begin after Labor Day

Spring Internships begin after MLK Day

Summer Internships begin mid June

“My years working as an SLPA with the SLC were some of the most exciting and educational years of my career.  Under the supervision of several SLPs, I was exposed to a wide variety of therapeutic styles, clinical expertise, and speech and language disorders.  The support I was given by everyone at the SLC was unparalleled and I always felt that I had an expert available to help me troubleshoot any difficulties I was having (progress stagnation, behaviors, etc). As an SLPA, I was given the opportunity to work with a variety of clients and their families and loved the sense of community I felt while I was part of this team.  I cannot speak highly enough of this program or of the wonderful group of therapists and office staff at the SLC. Working here is truly a one-of-a-kind experience.”

“Coming from a background in BCBA and not language, I was nervous of the transition.  Being able to shadow a staff member was the best job training.  You can read books and learn how to apply things that you learn but actually seeing a SLP working and providing services to a client was extremely beneficial.  It also gives you ideas on what to do with a client.  The videos [that we were required to watch] were very helpful too.  Having an SLP during the first few weeks of the start of school provided me with a strong understanding of what the students needed.  The SLP provided support and guidance for me.  The atmosphere of the SLC is one that I have never experienced before. Everyone is willing to help and share ideas.  Every door to every office is always open and welcoming.  I feel so thankful to be working at the SLC and to be able to call myself a SLPA.  I absolutely love my job and what I do.”
